For several years Nathan Anderson has been working on a body of work that attempt to marry painting and comics (Nathan is working on his own three part comic in his spare time); of which he has abandon.  He took away some important lessons from this undertaking: freedom of imagination and a closer vision involving his innermost life.

Nathan grew up in rural Niles Michigan a little over 10 years after segregationist practices ended in the United States of America.  Born biracial to an African American father who was subject to Jim Crow era laws and born to Sharecropper parents in Clarksdale Misssissippi (migrated to Kalamazoo Michigan) and a German American mother who grew up poor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in chilly Ontonagon County on a dairy farm (migrated to Niles Michigan).  Taken into consideration, unsurprisingly much of Nathan's childhood was tumultuous.

The current body of work addresses notions of being, identity, and identification both  personal and universal.  What is human-ness as opposed or in conjunction with animal-ness?  What is Nature?  Or, what is natural-ness?  These concerns and others are the preoccupations Nathan has become obsessed with.

Some of Nathan's preliminary sketches for upcoming paintings can be seen under the "Illustration" tab of this site.
